Bringing it back with Bourdain!

bourdain

The journey to gastronomy and culinary exploration should be handed over to our ultimate foodie, acclaimed chef and world traveler, Mr Anthony Bourdain. Watching the episode of No Reservation – London, one of the many great episodes that Anthony has made, I was given a glimpse of England that many of us has been misunderstood for the longest time. Not just the beer drinking (ok, thats true) and fish and chip eating (ok, they still love their F&C) society, the English (not the language but the people, mind you) surprisingly has a great culinary tradition that was lost in time but is now enjoying a revival. Traditional dishes such as the blood cake, baked bone marrow and pig’s innards are being revived by English Chefs who have the passion of “bringing it back”, the term used by the butcher at the Smithfield Market.
One interesting highlight of the show was the tour of London’s SoHo, a chic and hip area similar to that of the village in NYC and it was once London’s vice center.
In the London episode, Anthony also traveled to Edinburgh, Scotland, to taste some fish and chips from Mermaid – Fish and Chip store. Other than the traditional fish and chips, Mermaid also serve some deep fried “mystery meat”. Then he headed off to Leith, the area where fresh seafood and produce can be savored alongside with a pint of Guinness, for breakfast!

If you are not watching Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservation, you don’t know what you are missing. What are you waiting for, hurry up and change your channel to the Travel Channel. No Reservation is aired on Mondays 9pm EST.

Love it, loathe it? Comments are appreciated.

A Happy Journey Starts Like That! – PCK Rap

// July 21st, 2009 // No Comments » // Entertainment, Music, Thoughts

I was browsing through YouTube, when I stumbled upon this great video where Phua Chu Kang, a famous Singaporean TV Sitcom character, is rapping about etiquette in the Singaporean Subway system. The title of the song is “A Happy Journey Starts Like That” and I must admit, the tune is damn catchy.

More on Phua Chu Kang here and enjoy the video:

H1N1 Song – Remixed from Wonder Girls’ Nobody

// July 21st, 2009 // No Comments » // Entertainment, Music, News

This song about H1N1 is hillarious. The H1N1 virus a.k.a Swine Flu has spread all across the world in less than 4 months, killing almost 700 people. First case of H1N1 was found in Mexico and it is now a pandemic.  Ms Magaret Chan, WHO Director, says that H1N1 will be the biggest and fastest spreading flu pandemic we have ever seen.

Proton Satria Neo and Perodua Myvi, bashed on Top Gear

// July 13th, 2009 // No Comments » // Entertainment, Thoughts

If the headline didn’t grab your attention yet, wait til you watch the video. Top Gear season 13 episode 4 featured 3 cheap cars that you can get in Great Britain on its show. The folks at Top Gear got a Proton Satria Neo, a Perodua Myvi and a Chevy Aveo. Proton and Perodua are both Malaysian car manufacturers and being a Malaysian, I was pretty sad and disappointed when most of the adjectives used to describe the Satria Neo and Myvi were either negative or unpleasant. Same goes for the Aveo although I could care less for a shitty car from a shitty company that have just “recovered from bankruptcy” after receiving billions of Government aid.

Watch the video:

Malaysian car makers have light years ahead of them before they start producing cars of the same quality as those of the Japanese or Koreans. Until that day comes, we will have to bear watching Malaysian cars being labeled as cheap, plasticky, distasteful and awful because that’s the truth and the truth hurts!

p.s.-Dear Tun Mahathir, I am pretty sure when you had your cronies starting up Proton, you probably envisioned a car company producing cars that will make Malaysians proud, didn’t you? After 24 years in business and many billions of Ringgits later, Proton is still manufacturing lousy cars!

If anyone from Proton or Perodua happens to be reading this, please improve the quality of the your future cars. Please do this for the sake of your companies, Malaysia and its people!

“I’d rather be in Paul Scholes” – Jeremy Clarkson describing the Myvi.

Were there times when you overslept and were late for work? In those situation you would need to have a master plan or rather have a speed like that of Superman to get ready for work. In Japan, there is a game show  that shows you and I how to get ready for work in under 5 minutes. As an added bonus, you will be shown how to prepare a complete breakfast consisting a toast, an egg, a slice of ham and a cup of drip style coffee!
